What does it mean to be an active member? (September 2002)
When you look up the word “busy” in the dictionary, it’s amazing you don’t see “woman business owner” as part of the definition. We’re pulled in so many directions, between running our businesses, being there for our loved ones, and taking care of our personal needs – it’s no wonder all of us cringe at the idea of volunteering for one more thing.

Nevertheless, something attracted all of us to seek out the company of our sister NAWBO members. Commiserating with other business owners seems to ground us somehow because no one else understands what it’s like to live in our skin. And brainstorming with each other inspires us and gives us energy to come up with new ideas for our businesses and actually try them out.

This is what NAWBO is all about.

That camaraderie and magic connection are what make us active members. That’s all. Not the number of events we attend or the number of other members we keep in touch with every week or every month.
Sure, for some, “active” means attending every meeting. For others, it means simply paying annual membership dues. Somewhere between those two extremes is the real answer. Being active really is in the heart.
