Bioterrorism:
An auditor’s role in keeping hospitals secure (May/June
2002)
Last year’s Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center
and the Pentagon, combined with the anthrax deaths and bioterrorism
scare that followed, put the United States on a heightened state
of alert. For hospital auditors, the situation underscored a
need for their facilities to be prepared for acts of terrorism
that have moved from “what if” scenarios to very
real possibilities.
The key to dealing with the threat of bioterrorism, according
to auditors in the medical field, is preparedness. Those who
work with hospitals and other health-care facilities need to
make sure their operations have plans in place to handle these
events, and those plans need to be documented and tested. Auditing
professionals from a national hospital chain, a statewide health-care
system and a nationwide rehabilitation system address how their
organizations are handling this challenge. |
